Ch.5 pg.81-96

Summary:
Nick comes home and he sees Gatsby's house all lit up. Gatsby talks to Nick and invites him to Coney Island and a swim in his pool because he wants Nick to set up the tea with Daisy. Nick agrees and Gatsby offers a business deal that he refuses. Gatsby sends a person to cut Nick's lawn and helps him make his house look nice. Daisy comes over and the intial meeting with Gatsby is awkward. Gatsby felt like it was a mistake. They all go to Gatsby's house and he shows daisy his luxurious house. Gatsby and Daisy talk and they become friends again. They become preoccupied by each other and Nick decides to leave.

Character:

b)"My house looks well, doesn't it? See how the whole front of it catches the light."(89)
c) Gatsby is always concerned with how people perceive him. Image is an important thing for him. He does everything he can to try and impress Daisy. Gatsby wants to show Daisy and impress her with his luxurious house. His real emotions arise when he meets Daisy and he is in love and awkward.  Gatsby is determined to work for what he wants, which is Daisy.
d)Gatsby is the character that orchestrates everything. He deliberately does things because he has a bigger plan in mind. He is a clever and mysterious character that makes us question is we should trust him or not. He is trying to win over Daisy and befriending the people that are close to her to try and get to her.
Quote:
"Americans, while occasionally willing to be serfs, have always been obstinate about being peasantry." (88)
This pertains to the American Dream. Americans strive to achieve what they want. Gatsby is willing to do anything to get Daisy. He shows off his mansion and wealth to try and impress her. The American Dream is to have money and success. People are materialistic and they are concerned about their image. Myrtle likes to be with Tom because she can pretend to have that lavish lifestyle.
